Dissonance - Yann Brien

Yann Brien

My name is Yann Brien, I am a French printmaker living and working in London.
My recent body of work documents an ongoing investigation of the impact that our limited and often biased perception of the world has on the choices we make on a constant basis, and is inscribed in the continuity of a research linking visual content and psychology.
When we experience and try to comprehend the world around us, we often use rational thinking instead of logic to create relationships between people, objects and ideas and establish a relative sense of order and coherence.
I’m currently interested in offering visual hypotheses, in which interactions and tensions between simple graphic elements occur, and in experimenting with the subjective causal links and cognitive biases that are also created in the process.
Most of my work starts with repetitive, loose hand-drawn sketches or collages, which are then edited or even rebuilt from scratch until they provide as many entry points as possible.
The resulting compositions are mostly abstract, line-based constructions, whose titles invite the implementation of a narrative content, and in which usual points of reference such as distance and volume shift and dissolve to create a unique experience based on the active participation of the viewer.
