Growing Still Life
Born in Caerphilly, South Wales in 1963, Stephen Pill is in the main a self-taught artist.
“My painting career began with an apology to my next door neighbour for painting their coal bunker and was reinforced with a similar incident a few months later when I was discovered painting a car due for it’s M.O.T. at my dad’s garage. I was 3 years old!”
“A rugby career saw me play for Cardiff, Newport and London Welsh. The explosive rough and tumble of sport is to be found in all my work, indeed, my work explores the excitement and exuberance of running and jumping and climbing, all universal childhood experiences.”
Stephen Pill was accepted as a mature student by Chelsea College of Art and Design. Almost immediately he found the attitudes and opinions of his lecturers and tutors to be anathema to his more spontaneous approach to painting.
Despite his lack of formal training, his work displays a level of sophistication in relation to form and colour rarely witnessed in what are referred to by some as ‘Naive’ artists. This exuberant use of colours and abstract form evokes positive and optimistic emotions in the viewer and creates a sense of movement and power suggestive of the intensity of the waves that Stephen has so much enjoyed in his other passion - surfing.
“The images are narratives of action, incidents and adventures. The physical impulse in sport, elation at the point of victory, lifting trophies, overcoming obstacles both physical and mental, memorable places and encounters with people. Simply the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I choose media to best express the physical and emotional aspects of these narratives.”
Stephen Pill's paintings have the warmth, enthusiasm and excitement reminiscent of Paul Klee and Wassilly Kandinsky.
Stephen Pill teaches Primary School part-time and now lives in West London with his wife and three children.
